LYLE E. SPAIN

Lyle E. Spain, age 73, of Waterville, passed away on Friday, May 27, 2016, at Brian Memorial Hospital West in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Lyle was born to Clifford P. and Marjorie L. (Stocker) Spain on May 28, 1942, at Rock Island, Illinois. He graduated in 1960 from Albia High School in Albia, Iowa and in 1967 from William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He married Marilyn DeYoung on August 24, 1963, at Albia, Iowa.

In 1997, Lyle retired from Georgia Pacific, where he had spent most of his thirty years as the Superintendent of the Board Plant. Lyle was a member of the Waterville United Methodist Church and the Sutton Lodge # 85 AF & AM. He also served for several years as Chapter Advisor of the Blue Rapids Chapter of the Order of DeMolay, a masonic youth group.

Lyle was an avid KU booster and enjoyed attending live sporting events with his family, including several US Open Golf Tournaments, ice hockey games, and many KU football, basketball and baseball games, He also enjoyed the outdoors and his hobbies including wood-working, furniture refinishing, gardening, and bird watching.

Survivors include his wife Marilyn, his mother Marjorie Spain of Albia, Iowa, a son, Darrell Spain and Betsy Blaser, of Waterville, Kansas, a daughter, Penny Gerdes and husband Richard of Castle Rock, Colorado, two sisters; Janet Horn and husband Ray of Castle Rock, Colorado and Sheryl Spain of Green Valley, Arizona.

Lyle was preceded in death by his father and two brothers; James Spain and Dale Spain.

A memorial service is planned at 10:00 am, Saturday, June 4, 2016 at Terry-Christie Funeral Home in Waterville with Mr. Bob Bergquist officiating. Music will be provided by Rosemary Forst on the organ and Kim Oatney is the soloist. Honorary Bearers are; Phil Yenger, William Gerdes, John Dixon, Robert Blaser and Bill Horner. Inurnment, with Masonic rites by Phil Osborne, will follow the service at Riverside Cemetery in Waterville.
