Wilbur L. Paige, age 88, of Blue Rapids, passed away on Friday, May 27, 2016, at the Blue Valley Senior Living in Blue Rapids.

Wilbur was born October 1, 1927, on the family farm at Delavan, Kansas, to George J. and Lula M. (Spiker) Paige. He graduated from Wilsey Rural High School, Wilsey, Kansas, in 1947. He joined the US Army in 1948 and served in the Army Signal Corps until his honorable discharge in the fall 1951. He married Vera I. Roy of Wilsey on December 28, 1948.

He worked for Beech Air Craft, Herington Division until 1956. Wilbur moved his family to Blue Rapids in July of 1956 working for Certain Teed, Bestwall, and Georgia Pacific, until his retirement in October 1992.

He loved to play golf, spending many hours on the Waterville course as well as on other courses in the area. He was an amateur photographer. He enjoyed capturing those “Kodak” moments, not only of his family but others in the community. He spent many hours in his dark room patiently developing those pictures that we now look at with fond memories. For over 50 years he was a cooperative weather observer for the National Weather Service in Topeka. He received several awards including the prestigious Thomas Jefferson Award for his service.

Wilbur was a member of the Blue Rapids United Methodist Church, he loved singing in the choir and was the janitor for many years. He was also a member of the Masons.

He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, who will be missed by all who love him.

Wilbur is survived by his wife Vera of Blue Rapids, his son Philip Paige of Blue Rapids, his daughter, Althea (Mike) Wertz of Blue Rapids, his sister Velma (Marlin) Ames of Salina, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers; George Paige and Orville Paige, by two sisters, Mary Paige and Gladys Kovach and a great granddaughter, Emma.

Memorial Services are planned for 10:30 am, Saturday, June 18, 2016, at the United Methodist Church in Blue Rapids. Congregational hymns of “Freely, Freely” and “Hymn of Promise” will be accompanied by organist Beverly Hedke. A duet of “Victory in Jesus” will be sung by Dirk and Vicki Hargadine. A private inurnment at Wilsey Cemetery, Wilsey, Kansas is planned.
