Nels E. Hicks, age 95, of Marysville, passed away on Tuesday, June 28, 2016, at Cambridge Place in Marysville.

Nels was born March 17, 1921, at Benton, Illinois to William R. and Emma L. (Johnson) Hicks. He grew up in the Blue Rapids community attending the Fawn Creek School just west of town. In 1941 he joined the US Army. After being discharged he returned to Blue Rapids where married his childhood friend Winona R. Harker on June 18, 1943 at the Courthouse in Marysville. She passed away January 5, 1995.

Nels and Winona moved to California where he worked for Southern California Rapid Transit as a bus mechanic. He retired in 1984 after 40 years of service. In 1991 Nels and Winona moved from Monrovia, California to Salida, Colorado. Then in 2009 Nels and his son, Phil, moved to Marysville.

Nels enjoyed working with wood and metal. Along with porch swings and baby cribs, he made many wood board games and metal puzzles, giving most of them away to friends and acquaintances.

Survivors include his son Phil Hicks of Marysville, two grandchildren Mike (Tina) Hicks of Canon City, Colorado and Shawn (Gary) Gore of Seiling, Oklahoma and six great grandchildren, and a sister in law, Irene Hicks of Frankfort.

He was preceded in death by his wife Winona, six brothers; Bill, Carl, Harry, Rollin, Eddy and Ernie, and four sisters; Esther, Ruby, Dollie and Carrie Bell.

A graveside service is planned for 10:30 am, Saturday, July 2, 2016, at Prospect Hill Cemetery, North of Blue Rapids with Mr. Rod Christie officiating. Military Honors will be presented by a detail from Fort Leavenworth.
