DIRK A. HARGADINE

Dirk A. Hargadine, age 55, of Blue Rapids, passed away suddenly at his home south of Blue Rapids early Tuesday, January 3, 2017.

Dirk was born December 13, 1961, at Manhattan to Gerald D. and Delores A. (Austin) Hargadine. He graduated from St. George High School in 1980, then went on to graduate from Kansas State University in 1985, with a degree in Environmental Science. While in college he met and married his wife Vicki J. Smerchek. They married on March 11, 1983 at Blue Rapids United Methodist Church.

Dirk worked as a Hydrologic Technician for US Geological Survey. He was a member of the Blue Rapids United Methodist Church and had served eight years on the USD 498 Board of Education. He and Vicki were proud to see some of their land used as an outdoor classroom for the Valley Heights FFA. Growing up Dirk played sports and was a member of the Boy Scouts, earning the Eagle Scout rank. He was known for his ready smile, music and having fun.

Survivors include his wife Vicki, his mother Delores Hargadine, his children; Austin (Sarah) Hargadine of Olathe, Katrina (Suraj) Mahapatra of Lincoln, Nebraska, and a sister Susan (Bob) Lytle of Topeka, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins whom he adored.

Dirk was preceded in death by his father Gerald Hargadine.

A memorial service is planned for 1:00 pm, Tuesday, January 10, 2017, at the Grade School Gymnasium in Blue Rapids with Pastor Debby Dick officiating. The musician and soloist is Janie Brokenicky. She is to sing “Be Still My Soul” and “Ava Maria". Pre-recorded selections of “We’ll Meet Again,” and Dirk singing “Because He Lives” will be played. Honorary Bearers are to include Austin Hargadine, Suraj Mahapatra, Mike Tholen, Bob Lytle, Wayne Harms, Roger Nelson, Jeff Wagner and Brad Roepke. Inurnment will follow at the Czech Moravian Cemetery near Cleburne.

Memorials are suggested to either the Czech Moravian Cemetery or the Valley Heights Foundation to be used for scholarships. Donations may be sent in care of Terry-Christie Funeral Home at PO Box 61, Waterville, KS 66548.
